Corporate Broking

Corporate broking encompasses a number of different activities carried out by securities firms in the City; which can be broken down into the following:

Sales Traders – execute actual trades, working closely with the Institutional Sales team, and have dealer counterparts in the institutions (the Buy side).

Institutional/Equity Sales – sell equities to institutional investors such as Hedge Funds, Asset Managers, Pension Funds, and anyone else looking to buy equities.

Equity Research Analyst – responsible for producing sector specific research to be marketed to the institutions.  Researchers exist for the benefit of salespeople, producing written reports on trends in the share prices of particular industry sectors. Reports are read by salespeople who might then suggest investing in that sector.  The role is also one of deal origination at the smaller end of the spectrum – where an in depth understanding of a sector can provide analysts with the opportunity to introduce companies to the markets for the first time.

Corporate Brokers – act as an interface between their corporate clients and the market (which includes institutional investors that already own shares or may wish to own shares in the companies)
